Introduce the lesson by asking students about what they think “dating violence” is. Is there a difference between physical abuse and emotional abuse? If students don’t know, give examples such as isolation, extreme jealousy, and manipulation to illustrate emotional abuse. Give each student copies of the crossword and Web site list or the URL where both are located and can be printed out. They are to complete the crossword and take notes about any information they would like to include in a Dating Violence Awareness school campaign plan. Ask them to develop, in the course of the activity, five questions they would like to ask a speaker from a Domestic Violence agency. On the second day, arrange to have a speaker from a Domestic Violence agency speak to the class, particularly focusing on dating violence and its inherent escalation throughout a relationship.

Introduction to Astronomy — Students will explore the field of astronomy, including how astronomers make observations, and measure the large distances between astronomical objects.

Larger-than-life concepts such as prehistoric time, half-life properties and decay functions can be wrestled down to understandable portions using lesson plans provided by educational and state agencies for free online. Engaging middle school students in hands-on activities makes learning fun, increasing retention rates and the ability to integrate radiometric dating concepts with larger scientific and mathematical concepts later on.
The Radioactive Dating Game The University of Colorado hosts an interactive Radioactive Dating Game that teaches students about carbon and other radiometric dating types, as well as half-life and decay functions. Students must match the age of items with the percentage of dating elements remaining to win the game. This game can be downloaded for play on computers in classrooms, or it can be played online. This game is also translated into dozens of languages ranging from Arabic to Vietnamese.

Bison Bones and Prehistoric Kill Sites Montana’s Office of Public Education offers a lesson plan which teaches students about radiometric dating using information provided online about American Indian bison bones and prehistoric kill sites.
Dating Matters®: Strategies to Promote Healthy Teen Relationships
Scientific measurements such as radiometric dating use the natural radioactivity of certain elements found in rocks to help determine their age. Scientists also use direct evidence from observations of the rock layers themselves to help determine the relative age of rock layers. Specific rock formations are indicative of a particular type of environment existing when the rock was being formed.
For example, most limestones represent marine environments, whereas, sandstones with ripple marks might indicate a shoreline habitat or a riverbed. The study and comparison of exposed rock layers or strata in various parts of the earth led scientists in the early 19th century to propose that the rock layers could be correlated from place to place.
Locally, physical characteristics of rocks can be compared and correlated.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read.
I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc.
